How I got to # 1 in Google…

Dirty Blue Widgets Contest Winner

Well the competition is finally finished and my hard work paid off.

I held # 1 position on Google for most of the contest due mainly to my mule like attitude and link building.

So I want to go through the techniques I used mainly to see what I did myself because I thought my ass was going to be whipped and I really surprised myself. So I suppose it’s selfish really, but I want to examine each step I took so I can examine exactly what I did in order to repeat the process again.

Basically, one of the things I did was pinged everything….even if I farted I pinged it … lol

The trigger happy pinger!

Admittedly, I had some strong links from PR sites coming in but I am subscribed to lots of different SEO newsletters and noticed in November that Google started to mention that they would be taking a lot more notice of sites containing multimedia and interactivity. They also said that this would become much more important by Summer 2009. (flash video was also mentioned favorably)  Whether this helped or not…who knows… like I say … I was surprised by the win so I am just trying to analyze the steps I took.

So over the next few weeks I will go through the steps I took using text and video to describe my progress from November to January. As I say this is not to boast but to try and learn from this contest and take that knowledge on to my future projects.

    Nigel,

Congratulations on a job well done! I was hovering around #5 most of the time then the last two weeks before end of game, my site dropped down to 40th. Now it’s #2 from my data center (and I’m sure I’ll eventually get #1 once all the article runs kick in.)

    Thanks Howard,

Everybody really worked hard at winning the contest.

I could feel the constant pressure at my back and just kept going forward like a steam train.

I learned a lot from the contest but it also took a lot of my energy.

If the competition had revolved around Yahoo I would have been screwed….I just couldn’t top it. Maybe there are techniques for Yahoo that I have to learn.

    Nigel.

Congrats Nigel. I was #2 for most of the contest but could never catch you. I did a lot of link building in the beginning and couldn’t do a lot in the last half but I don’t think it would have mattered as you had a lot of good solid links. The high PR ones I tried to get will probably show up next month LOL

Just by pinging you achieved rank 1 on Google. Pretty interesting.

  7. Nigel Nix Says:

I should have been more specific….

Pinging definitely helped get me some low energy one way links but my regime included many link building strategies including:

    Podcasting

    Article Distribution

One Way Links From Related Sites

    Squidoo/Hub Pages

    Photo Submissions

    Video Marketing

Highly Targeted On Page Keyword Navigation

    Directory Submissions

    etc . etc. etc.

  8. Change of Address Says:

  9. Greg Says:

    Nigel,

The related sites on which you placed links, were they mostly .com sites?
